On Saturday I had the opportunity to interview local folks rallying at the Benzie County Democrats office on US 31 in Honor. More than 150 people lined the highway with handmade signs listing the reasons they were demonstrating, including one that read: “Democracy in Distress.”
I walked among the demonstrators asking them to share their signage and why they were out in the streets. The two audio segments below were broadcast this morning on WUWU 100.1, a community radio station launched in the summer of 2024 to be a voice for Elberta and Frankfort. I had fun chatting with host Paul May at the station.
This first segment features people making their signs.
This second segment features the rally goers along the highway. Passing motorists showed their support with lots of hand waving and honks.
What struck me was the diversity of the crowd. From 20-somethings to 80-somethings to Democrats and a couple of disgruntled Republicans, our community of Democracy protectors showed up once again to send a strong message to Washington. I was glad to capture a bit of it.
Great stuff, Leslie! I've gone to one rally at the state capitol and will attend more. We all need to be Loud and proud! Keep making a difference!
Thanks, Nancy! I know you are loud and proud and making a difference!
